Book Review: Varaha’s Vengeance

The Battle of Vathapi: Varaha’s Vengeance starts after the events of the first book, Nandi’s Charge where the Pallavas and their allies have managed to seize a few forts from the Pandyas and their allies and now the other side has to reinforce their might.

Just as he had done in the first part, Arun Krishnan has meticulously presented every scene and all the settings. The spy network set up by both sides; the generals and citizens all preparing for an inevitable war; the actions of each king and their reactions are all perfectly pictured in the book. There are many adrenaline filled moments where we as readers can feel the rush of excitement of the characters as if we are one with them.

SEVENTH-CENTURY INDIA. A GRIM STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL UNFOLDS. WILL THE PALLAVAS BRAVE THE CHALUKYA FURY, OR BE SWEPT AWAY BY THE RELENTLESS TIDE OF HISTORY?

After months of setting their plan in motion, three gallant Pallava captains march forward, driven by King Narasimhavaraman’s vow to avenge their clan’s honour. In response, the indomitable Chalukya King Pulikeshi launches a fierce counterattack, aided by his brother, Kubja Vishnuvardhana.

The Kings may be the ones in power but more central to the story are the three spies who are seen time and again risking their lives for their king.

The three captains, currently working as spies also find love. But their love has to wait as this is the time for duty to their king. The warmth of true love and the coldness of a ruthless war is juxtaposed perfectly.

The author has set the stage for an epic battle in the third book and I can surely say that it will be as interesting as the first two parts.

My rating: 4.6/5
