Book Review: The Descendants

Blurb:

Directed by the strings of fate, Jay is heading towards the truth concealed in family legend and a prophecy that can be traced back to the times of the Mahabharata war.When Jay realizes the supernatural possibilities that the black element is capable of, he is determined to use it for the greater good. But, as history has shown, when there is power in the wrong hands, greed takes prominence and compassion takes a back seat.

When a book starts with events unfolding fast and easy, you know you are in for a treat. The Descendants by Laksh Maheshwari and Ashish Kavi is one such book. The premise of the story is good, the build up is even better.

The story begins in 1942, with three brothers travelling on a train with their father. The first chapter itself is full of fun and feels.

In the second chapter, in the year 2020,  we meet the central character of the book is Dhananjay Somvanshi, known as Jay, CEO of Vantra Technologies who has found an unknown black object and this leads him onto a path which is full of wonder, deceit and betrayal.

The story moves back and forth, tying the different eras together with such ease that it seems almost effortless. As a reader, the interest in the story never fades and it holds on to you with every page.

There is no peace without conflict;

no joy without sadness;

no virtue without sin;

and son, there is no sannyasa (renunciation) without karma.

The Descendants

The characterisation is also brilliant. Every character has an important part here and as events unfold and the links to the eternal epic Mahabharata is forged, interest keeps on growing.

This is the first part of a trilogy and I can’t wait to pay my hands on the second part.

My rating: 4.3/5
