Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is a novel by Gail Honeyman published in 2017. The novel is about a 29 year old woman named Eleanor Oliphant who lives alone in Glasgow, Scotland . She is academically intelligent and a loner. She is awkward in social settings and has no friends.

She feels that she is completely fine and others have underdeveloped social skills. The novel traces her journey through her past and present and how she comes with her trauma in a journey of healing.

If someone asks you how you are, you are meant to say FINE. You are not meant to say that you cried yourself to sleep last night because you hadn’t spoken to another person for two consecutive days. FINE is what you say.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Eleanor has suppressed her trauma and her mental health issues are stemming from this trauma. Through her journey we realise how proper support and motivation can help a person seek support to deal with their trauma and mental health problems.

Through Eleanor, Gail Honeyman has shown the power of friendship, kindness and self-acceptance. Eleanor’s friend, Raymond, whose companionship she had accepted only reluctantly and her colleagues at work help her through her healing process.

This book is a must read for understanding another different facet of mental health issues.

  1. Suprbly written… It’s short but up to the point. I often relate to this Oliphant because I am also introvert.
