X is Not So Easy

X has to be the most difficult English alphabet. I used to love playing word games (I still do but I don’t find partners anymore) but I can’t even remember what we used to write if X came in Name, Place, Animal, Thing. X as a letter can flummox even the best of us. This one alphabet, that is just two lines crisscrossing each other had me worrying about this post since April 1st.

But, if you notice things around you properly, X has to be among the most used alphabets.

  • It is used to mark a particular point in a map. Whether you are in a building or a mall, “you are here” is mostly marked using X. The treasure maps we used to play with or we see in video games use X to show the point where we have to reach.
  • X was the letter used by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen to name the rays he discovered using cathode ray tubes and named them X-Rays because he didn’t know the nature of these rays.
  • How many of us have spent our school-life trying to find the value for x in our Maths class? This x sometimes turned into a nemesis which invariably had us lose a lot of our marks.

A little exercise for you: How many names, places, animals and things can you tell me with X? Don’t ask your search engine please!
