Looking Out of My Window

When I first moved to Mumbai, my major concern was the kind of house we would get. Everywhere you look around there are buildings and more buildings. I did a lot of house hunting and finally found a flat with a view that was not somebody’s balcony but trees and road and railway line.

I have placed my dining table in suchย a way that when I sit to eat, I can see outside. The trees attract many birds and they also visit my small balcony garden. There isn’t too much traffic and people mostly do not honk while passing through so the road doesn’t concern me.

But the thing that attracts my attention the most is railway line. A part of the Mumbai local railway circuit, local trains zoom in and out multiple times each day. In the mornings I see trains leaving the station for Mumbai, full to the capacity and in the evenings they come back once again full of people coming back home after a long day at work. It is not much crowded during the day though.

I have always been fascinated by trains; I love taking train journeys. The schedule, the enormous train engines, rhythm of their movement on the tracks, strangers part of the same joureny for a little while; it all enraptures me. I haven’t travelled by trains at all in the last few years but after moving to this city, I at least get to see them multiple times a day.

So, I sometimes take my tea/ coffee to the balcony and enjoy it while watching the famed Mumbai local trains zoom past with their rhythmic movement on the tracks. The people on these trains may be full of urgency to reach their destinations but the train follows only it’s schedule and speed. It is never affected by anything else.
