24th of January is celebrated as The National Girl Child Day in India. The aim is to generate awareness about empowering a girl child and create an environment where a girl can thrive and achieve her dreams. In a country where equal opportunity is still denied to many girls, there is a need to ensure that every family, every person understands that the girl child is special. She should get the chance to study, play and shine.
I have written a few lines in the occasion of National Girl Child Day 2026.
English translation of the poem:
O Mahadev! spoke Bhawani, I wish to descend to Earth as someone’s daughter.
Mahadev replied, “But Bhawani,
You are already the daughter of Giriraj (King of Mountains).”
You have already lived the life
That a king’s daughter receives;
Along with being the Power (Shakti) of Shiva,
You are also Shailputri (Daughter of the Mountains).
O Mahadev! I am a Goddess, I possess many divine powers.
Whatever I desire, I can achieve in a moment.
But every daughter of the Kaliyug (modern age)
Portrays many forms, just like me.
First, she is a daughter, Whose laughter fills the entire courtyard.
Whose playfulness encompasses all of life,
Who fills every moment with color.
As she grows, she continues to spread happiness;
Sometimes she is Lakshmi in the form of daughter,
Sometimes Sita in the form of a wife,
Radha, in the form of a lover,
And sometimes Parvati, in the form of a mother.
She is her father’s dream,
Her mother’s truest friend.
She shares a bond of love with her sister,
And is the pride of her brother.
Whether it is her parents’ courtyard
Or the world she builds with her husband,
Sometimes she becomes her own shelter,
Always carrying happiness within her heart.
She is not just a daughter, wife, or mother;
She is a sister, a daughter-in-law, and an aunt too.
She showers love upon every relationship,
Whether as a grandmother or as someone’s friend.
And when her dreams are given wings,
Her flight carries her to the highest skies.
Whenever she is given a fair chance,
Whenever no one seeks to hold her back,
She achieves not just self-reliance,
But a greatness that none can equal.
Some call her as delicate as a flower,
Some call her as beautiful as a butterfly.
Sometimes she is compared to the full moon,
Sometimes her playfulness is like a flowing stream.
So many forms belong to one girl,
A girl is the pride of this world.
A girl completes the home and family,
A girl is the very life-force of the galaxy.
