A high profile case of a high profile businesswoman. Indrani Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 for the alleged murder of her oldest daughter Sheena Bora. The news caused quite a storm at the time. There were news reports and everyone had an opinion on her guilt.
Now, Indrani Mukerjea is out on bail and has penned her memoir, Unbroken. She starts with the day she was arrested for the alleged murder and moved back and forth from her past life to her jail time.
She has had a busy eventful life, some events have been horrific and yet she has persevered. From being raped at the age of 14 and again at 16 by her father and giving birth to the child resulting from that rape, she has had to deal with things that no teenager should even have to face; that too in their own home!
In a country where every move made by a woman is judged, some of her choices may be deemed selfish because as an unwed teenager she put her career over her children but she had the guts to do what she wanted to.
The book is a well written account of her life and it shows that life choices cannot be thought of as black and white. Every decision has multiple aspects and the ripple effect can cause a lot of collateral damage too. The judgements passed by all and sundry have printed Indrani Mukerjea as a highly ambitious woman who would do anything for power and money but that may not be the case here.
The murder case is still sub-judice so she has not given more details on that and rightly so and whether she has murdered her daughter or not is a matter for the courts to decide but as a reader, her book makes for a riveting read.
