Recently I took a road trip to Rameshwaram with my family. Whenever we have to travel outside the city, we take road trips but this one was by far the best we have undertaken. From Navi Mumbai to Dhanushkodi, this was a road trip that had lots of fun, food and some frustration all packed into one family holiday.

We prefer road trips because my Little Miss struggles in crowded places and loud noise or too many people talking at once, so airports and railway stations are not the easiest of places for us. On the other hand, she loves travelling by car and does not mind road trips at all. Hence, we packed our bags and off we went by road to Rameshwaram.
Such journeys are usually long, so they need good planning, a lot of packing and food and snacks. Also, your car needs to be in tip-top condition. Always check your tires, fuel and battery. It is advisable to keep a small puncture repair kit, air pressure gauge and a small tyre inflator in the car. There are always going to be stretches of road where you will not find any repair shop or help so it’s always better to be prepared.
We started from our home very early in the morning so as to avoid the morning rush hour traffic. With Google Maps and food, the journey was quite good. Once you are out of the city limits, the picturesque roads are something that everyone enjoys.

That is the beauty of travelling by your own vehicle. You can take a route you like and stop whenever you wish to. The fields along the road, the rows and rows of trees add to the beauty of any landscape. As we kept going south, the architecture too was so different and beautiful.
Wherever we stopped to take a coffee break, for coconut water, or for meals, we were met with smiles and lovely hospitality. Never once did I feel that there was any language barrier. A lot of communication was done using signs and pointing at things but people were so nice and warm that we moved ahead with a happy heart.
I particularly love beaches and driving with the ocean on both sides was an altogether different experience. We visited the temples, learnt about the stories of the place, did some shopping, spent time at the beach and I left Rameshwaram craving for more.
