A Sea of Ships and Souls by Jordan S. Keller is about the sea, adventures and pirates, just as the name suggests. The story starts with Jace Kit, son of parents who are washers living on Crescent Isle. He dreams of riding into the sea on his own someday.

He meets a young girl, Sable who says she is a sea sprite and needs his help to save the Ocean Queen from the Dread Pirate. Thus, he embarks on a journey with her on the ship he has built. Together they partake in adventures and face dangers. But do they manage to save the Ocean Queen or will their efforts go in vain?

The story is good, the narrative quite appealing and immersive. The description of Crescent Isle, the sea side, the ships and Jace’s journey is all beautifully given. The book makes it easy to visualise the places and the adventures.

“This life will show you a hundred things to lose faith in, but never let your faith in yourself be one of them. And never let someone’s hateful words wound you for long. You decide your worth; you get to pick if you want to be heroic or not.”

I found the book good for the most part. Only the ending seemed a bit hurried. When the premise was to save the Ocean Queen from Dread Pirate, more pages should have been dedicated to this. I would have liked to read more about the Dread Pirate and the climax happened way too fast for me to enjoy it.

The writing in the beginning was a bit problematic, sometimes I had to read a line twice to understand the flow. But as the story progresses these problems disappear.

All in all it is a good book and quite enjoyable.

My rating: 4/5

I want to thank Book Sirens and author for advance copy of the book.
