D: Dancing With Little Miss

The previous Saturday, Little Miss’s school had its Annual Function. The kids were all looking so cute and did some wonderful performances.

Annual days provide a stage where every child gets the opportunity to shine. For students in a special school, performing in front of an audience is a powerful form of self-expression. It allows them to show their talents in ways that go beyond traditional classroom settings.

The process of practising and performing with a group does help these kids with the social anxiety that they sometimes feel. The power of applause brings a feeling of achievement.

Little Miss and her group had to dance on โ€œJaadu..Jaaduโ€ from Koiโ€ฆMil Gaya. The kids were all dressed up to depict the solar system, with sun and the planets. My Little Miss was Jupiter. The parents were told to make round cutouts of the planets for their respective kids and considering that I have historically been bad at any art activity, I sure was at a loss.

But, I decided that if Little Miss can get over her aversion for loud music and group activities and practise her dance steps, I too can make a good enough Jupiter for her. So I got down to work. First, I made a cardboard cutout, covered it with chart paper and painted it.

The first draft, as I called it, was passable but the circle really wasnโ€™t proper so I found myself at an art supplies shop. Thankfully they had circular boards and canvas sheets. I purchased the supplies and made another Jupiter. I was fairly satisfied with my work and as you can see below, Little Miss went on stage as Jupiter.

The kids, some of them needing prompts, were helped in their performance by their teachers and other therapists at the centre. It was so heart warming to see our children perform on stage for the first time.

For families, these celebrations are often the highlights of the academic year. They provide a core memory that isn’t defined by therapy goals or educational assessments, but by pure celebration and fun. Little Miss and her friends had fun; the parents were proud and it was an enjoyable day overall.
