G for Gossip and G for guys and girls. For what is the one thing that we enjoy doing the most? It is a good old gossip session with our besties. Gossip has been the heart and soul of human existence since the time language was created and people started talking to each other.
Gossip, when done in a light hearted manner does not hurt anyone. The only kind of gossip that hurts is when it is done to malign the reputation of someone. Gossip sometimes starts a rumour that snoballs into something so big that it tarnishes the reputation of all involved. So it is important to exercise caution and verify the facts before making it a topic of discussion.
Gossiping should be indulged in with only the trusted group of people where you are sure that nothing will be quoted out of context and nobody’s reputation will be harmed.
One of the primary reasons that people engage in gossip is for social bonding. Talking about someone else’s life, actions, or decisions can create a sense of community and closeness among the people who are sharing the information. But generally the topic of gossip ends with the change of topic and that is how it should be.
Gossip is also a way of letting off steam, a way to relax the mind and take a break from one’s own life. It is also believed that gossiping alleviates anxiety and creates a social bond. You know your trusted group of friends and family members and you feel part of a group. Your brain relaxes around them and that helps reduce stress.
Gossip has been around for a long long time and it will continue to thrive. We just have to make sure not to hurt others with our words.
