Braving the Advent of Winter

The advent of cold weather always brings with itself the usual gifts of runny nose, cold, cough and sometimes fever too. However hard we try to avoid these pre-packaged gifts, taking help of homoeopathy, allopathy, ayurveda, dadi-nani ke nuskhe, they sneak into the house and then make themselves at home.

In our home, cold usually starts with my Little Miss, although sometimes Hubby dear too brings home the cold. Little Miss gets it from school because well, where there are kids grouped together, cold and cough is always rampant.

Last week started quite normal, Monday morning was the regular frantic affair with all three of us rushing to our office and school duties. By Tuesday, Little Miss was ready with cold and cough and by midnight, fever also made it’s presence known to us.

So then, instead of precautionary medicines, we moved to healing medicines. The fever was thankfully gone the next day and cold to subsided by the end of the week but by then it had been passed on to me too.

There I was, the unsuspecting victim of this cold despite taking utmost care of myself. And I sneeze loud! Like, very loud. Loud enough for my Little Miss to stop what she is doing and stare at me. I am better now but last week was a long one.

With no school to go to, Little Miss was getting bored and for someone who loves going out, staying at home was akin to a punishment. And as children do, the moment she started feeling better she had to play and run around the house. I have no idea why little ones don’t have the concept of resting when they are sick? All we grown-ups want is at least a day’s rest and hot tea and soup being served to us!

And seriously, Mumbai weather really needs to get the memo right and decide whether it wants to be cold or hot. Coming from a place where winters mean bone-chilling cold, this today-it’s-cold-tomorrow-may-be-hot is really confusing. The sun shines as if it’s ready to bake us and as soon as evening comes, the air gets cold. Why, oh why?
