Saturday was Annual Sports Day at Little Miss’s school. Children from all the branches of her school were participating and I too, feeling very brave and slightly anxious, registered her name.
We have spent so much time keeping her way from crowded places and gatherings to protect her from the sensory issues that every event takes some courage on our part too.
I registered her for two games, fishing and bull’s eye. I was sure if genetics is something to go by, she’ll be as abysmal at bull’s eye as I am. Targets and I have never seen eye to eye (pun intented).
The venue was in a mini-stadium which was quite far from our home. So, the long drive was a wonderful way to spend Saturday for my Little Miss because she loves travelling, specially when her Dad is driving.
The stadium was beautifully decorated and everything perfectly organised. There were recreational activities too for the children to enjoy their time.
But, once we reached the venue, Little Miss’s anger surfaced right at the registration counter. It was hot and noisy so we witnessed a Little Miss level tantrum right there.
Then, we moved on to the court and things did not really improve there. The noise was creating an auditory overload for Little Miss and thankfully her teacher came to help me. We did some ear compressions to help with the auditory overload and then she participated in the games.
We didn’t win any prizes but for me her participation was a prize in itself. It showed me how far we have come from being the child who made a U-turn whenever she saw any other kid to the one now who shares the same playing field with others.
Of course, we have a long way to go and we are all working on that. God willing, next year we will outperform and outshine everyone.
If Little Miss could talk, she would tell you that her favourite part of Saturday was the drive to and from the venue.
