Book Review: The Turning

Supernatural has been a realm that has always fascinated me as a reader. When done correctly, it makes for a near perfect story. I find something intriguing in the presence of something more than human powers. So, I started reading The Turning with a lot of hope and excitement and I was not disappointed.

The Turning, written by Shannaaya Chopra, is about Kiara Sharma. On her 18th Birthday, Kiara turns into a werewolf, a Katrol werewolf who are the most viscious of all. Katrols lose all sense of self when they turn and will kill anyone in their path.

When she returns to her human form, she finds out that her best friend is also a werewolf but he is not a Katrol which means that he has control over his mind when he turns.

It is only then that she comes to know about the secret city of Ordenia near Mumbai where werewolves reside in peace. She is also told about the danger the werewolves are in because of another Katrol.

As she is trained and acclimatized to the werewolf life, Kiara takes it upon herself to find a solution to save the city of Ordenia and werewolves living there. The only problem is that she may die in the process.

“See, that’s the thing about people.  Something new, something unconventional,  something out of their norm hits them, and their first reaction is to panic. To attack. To eradicate this terrifying unknown and let the world continue with its ‘normal’…”

I found the story quite fresh. The story is not just about supernatural but it is also about true friendship and love. The friends are each others’ support. They can do anything for each other, and are even ready to die for one another.

The writing is immersive and enjoyable. The action scenes will keep you entertained and the writing is such that every twist gives goosebumps.

I also happen to enjoy books with a strong female lead and this one too falls in the same category. The author has created a main character who is not perfect; she has all the power to be a monster and she has a choice to make; to give in to what she truly is or choose to be a saviour.

On the negative side, there are certain scenes that are convoluted but it can be completely overlooked.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

And, the cover is so beautiful. It is enough to attract any book lover’s attention. The story is also as good as the cover. There is supernatural,  magic and emotions and I highly recommend this book.

My rating: 4.5/5
