Home is where the heart is, and for some of us home is where the reading and writing nook is. Reading nooks don’t need too much; just a cosy corner, a comfortable sofa and a coffee table to hold coffee and sometimes it is used to keep our legs on.
Writing nook on the other hand requires a bit of planning. We all crave for that beautiful mahogany desk with a table lamp, few reference books and a laptop/ computer where we can just sit and go clickity-clackity.
The ideal writing day is when no one disturbs you while your creative juices are flowing and your creativity seems to be in love with you. But alas! That rarely happens. Adulting always gets in the way of creativity so the food and the lost sock and the doorbells all require immediate attention.
Do we go for the locked door phenomenon? We have all seen that when men need to work at home they almost always close the door and are oblivious to the “home/ world” around them. But when it comes to us, women we can rarely afford to do that. We know that the house won’t collapse if we are unavailable for a few hours and yet, we keep our ears and brains attuned to everything going around the house.
What are the kids doing?
Did that sound come from my kitchen?
Was that the doorbell?
Did I soak the chana for dinner?
For writing without any disturbances, you first need to focus your mind. For starters, put your phone away. Do not look at the notifications at all for some time. Checking one notification mostly leads to scrolling a little bit of WhatsApp, then Instagram, and the cycle continues.
If possible, close the door. That way you tell yourself that this is your creating time and no one is supposed to disturb you unless it’s an emergency. Also, let your kids play or read on their own for sometime. Just make sure nothing unsafe is around them and let them have some unsupervised time.
We all know there is a time in our household when all is peace and quiet. Utilise that time to create. It is ok to be not needed 24×7. You deserve your alone time; a time that is yours to claim and use as you want to.
