In my opinion,  one of the most courageous journeys imaginable is parenting a special needs child. And somewhere along this path, one rralises that building a strong support system – often including a wonderful team of therapists – is absolutely key.

I know, the thought of finding the “right” Occupational (OT), Speech, or Physical (PT) therapist in any Indian city or town can feel a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack made of good intentions and varying credentials! But trust me, it’s not just possible; it’s a journey that can lead to incredible breakthroughs and heartwarming progress for your little one.

Take it from someone who has met multiple therapists over the course of last 8 years, finding a good therapist not only helps the little one, it also goes a long way in guiding the harrowed parents through this journey. This isn’t just about finding professionals; it’s about finding allies who truly get your child and your family.

There are always credentials and degress to be looked at; but there are some points beyond the credentials that one must keep in mind.

  • Experience, Especially with Similar Needs: Does the therapist have experience with children who have similar diagnoses or challenges to your child? A seasoned therapist will often have a wealth of strategies. Don’t hesitate to ask about their experience during your initial visit.
  • The “Connect” Factor (for your child and for you!): This is huge. Watch how the therapist interacts with your child. Do they get down to their level? Do they use play and encouragement? Does your child seem comfortable and engaged? Equally important, do you feel heard and respected? A good therapist-parent relationship is a partnership!
    • We had a therapist who, after every session would complain “she does not do anything” or “she does not listen to me“. I withdrew Little Miss from there after 3 or 4 such sessions because it was clear to me that the particular therapist was not invested enough.
  • Clear Communication & Goal Setting: Do they explain their approach in a way you understand? Are they setting realistic, measurable goals for your child, and are they communicating progress effectively? You should feel like you’re part of the team, not just an observer.
  • A Holistic View: A great therapist understands that your child isn’t just a diagnosis. They’ll consider your child’s personality, interests, and even what makes them laugh! They’ll also appreciate the broader family context.
  • Language is Key: While many therapists speak English, having someone who can communicate fluently in your family’s mother tongue (Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, etc.) can make a world of difference for both your child and your family members. This aids in understanding complex instructions and building rapport.
  • Family-Centric Approach: In India, family is paramount. A therapist who understands and respects the role of grandparents, aunts, and uncles – and perhaps even suggests ways they can support your child at home – is a treasure. They should be open to discussing cultural practices and how they might integrate (or sometimes need to be adapted) with therapy goals.
  • Package Deals & Discounts: Many clinics or independent therapists offer package deals for multiple sessions. Always ask!
  • Session Frequency vs. Home Programs: Sometimes, having fewer paid sessions combined with a robust home program designed by your therapist can be more sustainable. A good therapist will empower you with activities to do daily at home.
  • Group Therapy Options: Group therapy can be more affordable and also offers the added benefit of social interaction for your child. Ask if this is an option for their needs.

Finding the “right” therapist is an ongoing journey, not a one-time event. You might try a few before you find someone who truly clicks. And that’s perfectly okay! Trust your instincts, lean on your parent community, and celebrate every little step forward your child makes. We have been lucky to find some of the best therapists wherever we have been to, be it Vadodara, Muzaffarpur or Mumbai.

Remember, you are your child’s best advocate. With patience, persistence, and a whole lot of love, you will build that incredible A-team that helps your child shine their brightest.

Yea, it is quite difficult to find therapist. Time, and money both are important factor in this journey and it is really difficult. Hey Malvika, I can feel it.
